Cement flooring refers to floors made with cement-based materials, often as a screed or topping over a suitable base. Depending on the system and finishing method, it can create a smooth, understated surface or a more textured, industrial look.
Cement-based floors can be considered for living areas, kitchens, retail spaces and other suitable settings. Some are installed as finished decorative surfaces, while others are levelling layers designed to receive tiles, vinyl or another floor covering.
At Atomic Flooring, we help Cape Town homeowners and businesses explore the right cement-based flooring approach for their space, substrate and preferred finish.
Discuss Your Project →Cement-based flooring can deliver an architectural look while providing a practical foundation for everyday spaces, when correctly designed and installed.
Choose a subtle, contemporary floor with natural tonal variation and a clean visual flow.
Explore smooth, trowelled, sealed or polished-look cement-based finishes, subject to the selected system.
Cement-based flooring can suit homes, studios, shops and selected working environments.
Preparation, thickness, joints and curing need to suit the base and intended floor use.
A suitable protective sealer can make routine cleaning more manageable; maintenance depends on the finish.
Discuss tone, texture, sheen and how the floor will complement the wider interior.
The appropriate cement flooring system depends on traffic, moisture, substrate conditions and whether the surface will remain exposed.
A continuous cement-based finish can create a calm, modern foundation for residential interiors.
Consider a sealed finish selected for spills, cleaning and everyday household activity.
Give suitable retail interiors a restrained, contemporary floor with a finish designed for the expected traffic.
Explore practical cement-based surfaces for creative spaces, offices and selected commercial interiors.
From soft neutral tones to a more industrial aesthetic, cement-based floors can be finished in different ways. Ask about available finishes, samples and what is appropriate for your property.
Both can deliver a contemporary, cement-like appearance, but they are not the same type of flooring system. The right choice depends on the substrate, desired finish and how much build-up the floor can accommodate.
Typically forms a more substantial layer in the floor build-up. It may level a surface or be specified as a finished, sealed floor, depending on the product and design.
Usually applied in multiple thin coats over a sound, prepared substrate to achieve a seamless decorative appearance, often with relatively little added height.
For substantial levelling or a new floor build-up, a suitable cement-based screed or topping may be needed. For a thin decorative refurbishment, microcement may be an option if the substrate is compatible.

Successful cement flooring depends on substrate preparation, the correct mix and thickness, joint detailing, curing and any protective finish.
Tell us the area, how the floor will be used and the finish you have in mind.
Check levels, moisture, cracks, movement joints and whether a bonded, unbonded or other system is appropriate.
Prepare and place the specified cement-based layer, then apply the selected finishing method.
Allow appropriate curing and drying time before sealing or use, and follow the maintenance guidance.
Cement flooring costs depend on the floor area, existing surface, required thickness, preparation, finish and whether the floor is a decorative final surface or a base for another covering.
Rather than publish a one-size-fits-all price, we recommend getting a quote based on your actual space.
Request a Project Quote →Cement flooring is not a one-size-fits-all product. The correct system should be chosen for the base, expected use and desired appearance.

Cement flooring generally describes a cement-based screed, topping or floor surface installed at a thickness suited to the system and substrate. Microcement is a much thinner, multi-layer decorative coating applied over a suitable prepared surface. Cement flooring can form part of the floor build-up; microcement is usually the decorative finishing layer.
Not exactly. Concrete typically contains cement, sand, stone aggregate and water, and may form the structural slab. A cement-based screed or topping is usually a separate layer used to level or finish the floor. The terms are sometimes used loosely, so the intended system should be confirmed.
Yes, some cement-based toppings are designed to remain exposed and can be sealed or finished decoratively. Other screeds are intended only as a base beneath another floor covering.
Cement-based materials can crack because of shrinkage, movement, substrate problems or curing conditions. Appropriate preparation, thickness, reinforcement where specified and movement-joint detailing help reduce risk, but no cement floor is guaranteed crack-free.
Certain cement-based systems can be used in bathrooms when suitable for wet conditions and paired with appropriate waterproofing and sealing. A cement finish alone should not be treated as waterproofing.
Drying and curing vary significantly with layer thickness, product formulation, weather and moisture conditions. A floor may be walkable before it is dry enough for sealing or covering; follow the selected system’s requirements.
Use cleaning products compatible with the installed sealer and avoid harsh abrasives. Re-sealing may be required over time depending on the finish and level of use.

I cannot recommend Shonn from Atomic Flooring in Cape Town highly enough—he is worth his weight in gold. He originally came out just to do my floors, but he ended up taking on the entire refurbishment project. What sets him apart is his incredible initiative; Shonn constantly noticed extra tasks that needed doing around the house and just sorted them without hesitation. It is incredibly rare to find a contractor who takes that level of personal pride and ownership in their work. His outstanding workmanship and proactive attitude made the whole process stress-free, and I have now made him my regular contractor for all future projects.Posted on Google![]()
